The Journey Cake was Delicious!

We had a wonderful field trip to the Hiwan Homestead Museum in Evergreen today.

Here are the recipes for the kitchen activities we participated in:

Journey Cake (Serves 30-32)
1 ½ cups sugar
¾ cup lard (margarine or butter OK)
1 ¾ cups apple cider/juice
4 ½ cups flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. baking soda

Combine and bake in a 9 x 13” pan at 375* for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Hard Sauce
½ cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
Grated nutmeg

Cream sugar and butter. Beat vigorously until light in color. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Spread onto top of cooled cake.
