Break Out Boxes were amazing!

Our librarian, Diane, set up a fabulous learning/team building activity today. Two different groups solved a series of challenges and puzzles. Successful problem solving lead to a code that helped unlock one of many locks.

Halloween Skate Day 2016

Halloween Skate Day 2016

Halloween is quickly creeping up on us and it’s time for all of the JCOS creatures of the night to gather at Skate City for our wicked all school skate day.  On Monday, October 31st, dressed in our most outrageous costumes, we will climb aboard the buses and be transported to the Skate City off of 121st for a monstrous time.

The cost is $8.00, which can be paid online through JeffcoConnect up until Friday, October 14th.  If, for some reason, you pay online and your child is absent the day of skate day, the money will be used to help pay for the all school end of the year picnic.  The $8.00 can also be turned in to your child’s advisor on Monday, Oct. 31st.  We’ll be picked up from school at 9:00 and dropped back off at 1:30.  Don’t forget to pack all the gooey and slimy things that you want to eat for lunch and bring your roller blades if you want to use them.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to wear your costumes, as long as it won’t get in the way of skating (no masks or costumes that hang down by your feet).  Don’t forget to bring your head, $8.00, your slimy lunch and your costume.  Parents, grandparents and siblings are welcome to join us if they dare, but must also pay $8.00.  Please call Rosie at #303-982-7056 if you have any questions.  Come dressed in your best and be ready to have a bone chilling good time.

                                                                                      Rosie and David

Directions:  Take Wadsworth South to 6th Ave.  Get on 6th Ave. going East.  Get off 6th Ave. on to I-25 going North.  Take I-25 all the way to 120th.  Take a left on 120th, cross the bridge and turn right on Delaware.  Turn right on to 121st and follow to Skate City, which will be on the right side of the road.

Haunted House – Do you like to be scared?  If so, come on down to the gym and get ready to scream.  We will open the doors to the haunted house around 1:45 and will keep them open until 3:30 or until everyone is too scared to go through any more.

Keep working on your OOF (Out of Five) Book Reports!

Out of Five Book Review

Section 1: Introductory paragraph essentials:
  • Your name, gender, age, and a little bit about you
  • The book’s title and author
    • Book titles have capital letters and are italicized.
    • Don’t forget to use the easybib add-on to cite your book.
  • The genre(s) the book fits into
    • Why does it fit into this genre? What are the talking animals that make your book a fantasy novel?
  • The original reason you chose this book to read

Section 2: A summary of the plot that doesn’t give away too much.  A summary should include:
  • Main characters
  • Setting(s)
  • Major events that show rising action
Life-the-Flap may be used to cover spoilers.
  • Major plot conflict
  • Resolution

Section 3 and Section 4:  For each of these “choice” paragraphs, select an the idea below (or make up your own):

Did this book inspire a movie? What are some of the similarities/differences between the film and the text? Be specific.
Pick one of the main characters and detail how the author makes the character seem like a “real person”. Make specific reference to language, behaviors, moods...
Explain what you like or dislike about the author’s writing style.  Use several examples from the text to support your opinion.
Research the author and write a short background or biography.  Feel free to include some fascinating facts or titles of other pieces written.
Write about is one of the book’s strengths (example: setting).  Include specific details from the text to support your opinion.
Write about one of the book’s weaknesses. Give an example and explain why.
Pick one of the thinking strategies we have been studying (monitoring for meaning, activating schema, asking questions, drawing inferences, determining importance, sensory images, synthesizing, problem solving) and explain how using it helped you deepen your understanding of the text.
Pick one of the settings in the story and describe the where and when.  What does the author write to make you feel like this location is a “real” place?
Make a list of at least 15 glossary words and their meanings as they relate to this specific text.
Example:
Tourniquet: a band tied tightly around an arm to stop the flow of blood
Macroscopic: something small but still visible to the naked eye
Come up with your own!

Section 5: Concluding paragraph
  • Give this book a score of 1-5 stars (or dragons or frindles or kittens…), with 5 being a “MUST READ”.
