Continuation is Tuesday evening starting at 5:30 sharp!

On Tuesday during the school day, sixth graders will be rehersing for their continuation council.  We will be organizing our portfolios so they can be on display along with the SDL magazines.

Plan to arrive at JCOS a few minutes early so you can look at some of the incredible work students have done during this last year of elementary school.

The continuation will begin in the Commons at 5:30.  Students, and honored guests, will have assigned seats during the council ceremony.

Following the council there will be time to socialize, continue looking through the portfolios and magazines, and enjoy some refreshments.

ALSO THIS WEEK:

Wednesday will be a sixth grade game day, classroom clean up, and All School Picnic.

The Balloon Ceremony will be on Thursday at around 10:30ish.  Sixth graders should bring a swimsuit and a towel for this traditional send-off.  This last day of school is also an early release day.

We still need $2 and a baby/toddler picture for many of our continuing sixth graders. We need these as soon as possible so we can get everything ready for the Continuation Ceremony next week!

Sixth Graders Team Build and Educate Next Year's Voyagers

Your child needs you! (and Gabi does too!)

Our classroom and school community is built on, among many other things, collaboration and trust. In these last weeks of the school year it has come to our attention that many of the sixth graders appear to no longer care about maintaining a safe and respectful environment at JCOS.  Students are ignoring and defying the Para educators during lunch and recess.  The specials teachers have had a difficult time maintaining peace. I have had to repeatedly move students who chose to talk to their neighbor rather than doing their work.

We all know it can be difficult to maintain focus during this time and accommodations have been made so everyone can be successful if they try.  Sixth graders will have a lot more brain breaks and team building activities during the day.  Lessons will be shorter with more choice and variety.  Texts and lessons are more high-interest and relevant. Fun community activities are occurring during several days of the next two weeks.

Please speak to your child about strategies and expectations for appropriate classroom and outside behavior.  If a child needs a lot of reminders to maintain a basic and understood level of safety and respect, he/she will no longer be considered trustworthy enough to participate in our out-of-school experiences.  What parent would want to take someone on Downtown Denver Day if that child is swearing, not following community rules, and being outright rude?

Some upcoming fun events:

Tuesday, May 19: Sixth Graders Host the Fifth Graders
Wednesday, May 20: Downtown Denver Day
Friday, May 22: Boondocks
Tuesday, May 26: Last IA Community Circle and 5:30 Sixth Grade Continuation
Wednesday, May 27: All School Picnic and Sixth Grade Portfolio Sharing
Thursday, May 28: Game Day, Balloon Ceremony, Early Release for LAST DAY

Please let me know if you have any questions and concerns.  I appreciate your support as we all try to end on a positive, educational, and loving note!

Picnic note from Rosie and Sam

End of the Year Picnic

On Wednesday, May 27th we are going to have our all school end of the year picnic to celebrate the year and all that we have accomplished together.  The picnic will begin at 11:30 a.m. with hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, watermelon, chips and a drink for everyone to enjoy.  Parents, grandparents and siblings are welcome to join us in this end of the year celebration.  The following activities will be set up for people to enjoy once their bellies are full: volleyball, soccer, badminton, 4 square, Frisbee, paddleball, bubbles, jump roping and more.

At around 12:30 p.m., people will have a chance to cool off in the sprinklers and on the splash pads, so be sure to bring your swimsuit, a towel and/or a change of clothes.  Sunscreen is another important item to bring and/or wear to the picnic. Around 1:45 p.m. the sprinklers will be turned off and the water fight will begin.  If people don’t want to get wet, they can continue playing the other activities that we have set up.  Popsicles will be handed out at 2:45 p.m., followed by a big clean up of the field.

If you have any questions, please call and leave a message at #303-982-7056. We look forward to a fun day of eating and playing together.  Cross your fingers for good weather!

Thanks to everyone who came to support our 6th graders!

SDL Voyage presentations are over!  We will relax on Friday with some field day fun and a screening of The Princess Bride. Keep an eye out for other events coming up in the near future.

Our continuation planners would love it if every family could contribute $2 to pay for cake and paper goods. We would also love each family to bring in a baby picture of their sixth grader for continuation. Please bring your money and photo to Gabi as soon as possible and no later than Thursday, May 21.
