Pickles and Pencils!

We need MAGAZINES!

Hello everyone!

All of our sixth graders have gotten their SDL proposal accepted and they have written a letter to an in-school consultant.  All students should be researching for their feature article/research paper.  Everyone needs to have at least three sources and they can not all be from the internet!  Your child might need help getting a public library card, ordering books, and picking them up from your local store.

Some students are truly self-motivated and are almost done with their rough draft.  WE LOVE THIS!!! We need some kid/teen magazines for the classroom so our motivated students can find models of additional things they can add to their SDL magazine.

Please write a note if you want the magazines back or if I can keep them and cut them up.

A continuation message from Angie den Hartog.

Parents,
Sixth grade continuation will be upon us before we know it.  I wanted to ask if there were any parents that would be interested in sharing ideas and discussing what we would like to do for the continuation this year.  If that is something that interests you, please contact me, Angie den Hartog (Lars' mom), at angiedenhartog@yahoo.com.  Thank you.

We have some fabulous writers! Let's see if we have a WINNING AUTHOR!

Teachers, Ask Your Students to Start Planning Now for the 2nd Annual Jeffco Writing Challenge!
*First place winners in each grade will win $100

The schools with the highest percentage of entries will also be winners:
* 1ST Place School Wins a $500.00 CASH PRIZE!
* 2ND Place School Wins a $300.00 CASH PRIZE!
* 3RD Place School Wins a $200.00 CASH PRIZE!

Last year hundreds of Jeffco students wrote stories and poems and competed for prizes. This year, we hope for even more!

Purpose: To engage young authors in creative and authentic writing for the love of writing expression!
T
his year’s prompt: Write a crossover.

A crossover combines elements like characters or setting from two or more stories.

• There’s no limit to how creative you can get with this.
• You can combine characters from any genre (fiction or nonfiction), and place them in any setting you choose.

For example:
• What might happen if Curious George found himself in Oz with Dorothy and Toto?
• What if Bella Swan, Jacob, and Edward had all met at Hogwarts? Or if Harry, Hermione, and Ron had lived in the world of Divergent?
• What if Thomas Edison (or Dracula, or Tom Sawyer) had been on board the Titanic?
• What if instead of boys landing on the island in Lord of the Flies, it had been the girls from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants?

The Jeffco Writing Challenge is open to all Jefferson County School students in K-12.

Poetry, short stories, or dramas (up to 1000 words max) are all welcome.

Deadline for submissions is April 8, 2015.

A Note from Melody re: Conferences

Dear JCOS families,

As you plan your time for conferences next week, I invite you to plan a visit  to the art room. It is a great way to connect with your child as a creative person. There will be a few very easy art projects for you to make with your child. You are also invited to chat with Melody about how your student is doing in class. This is a great opportunity to nurture the whole child/person.  Also, we will be making a movie about what it means to be strong. This film will be entered in the Film Festival. Come by and be in our movie.

Thanks,
Melody

Is it okay to bring a laptop to school? Absolutely! But.....

As we are getting into the SDL process, it is often helpful for students to bring in their own laptops for work time.  This has been very successful in the past if the students rigorously follow these guidelines:

1. Ask before using the laptop/ipad/kindle as there are only specific times and dates they are permitted.
2.  Classroom and library use only (no field trips out to the playground).
3.  100% appropriate use only, even one trip to visit Minecraft, Farmville, YouTube (for example)  results in the immediate removal of the device and privileges taken away.
4.  No sharing of equipment.
5.  The student is responsible for the safety of their device at school and in transport.
6.  Students may not access other student's work unless they have been invited to do so, even if they have been give the password.
7.  Students may not give their password out to their friends.
8.  Rules may be added if situations arise.  Thank you for reading to the end of the list.
