This THURSDAY!

Mandatory Trip Meeting and Your Voyager: What to Expect

Thanks to all the parents who have already filled out their child's trip paperwork packet.  Please make sure to include a COPY of your actual, up-to-date insurance card.  Students who do not provide copies of the insurance card will be charged $3 for tripster.

I look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday at 3:30!

Voyage Proposals are due December 20.

The Voyage Proposal: Demonstrating you have really thought out your project and are prepared to dedicate a lot of time and energy to it!

This is a writing piece that will be worked on both in class and at home, utilizing the writing process from brainstorming to publication.  Final essays will be turned in and evaluated for approval by Gabrielle. We will be looking for complexity and rigor in the topic. We will also be making sure that all of the project components have been addressed.

The proposal needs to address, in detail, the following subjects:
1.     What is your topic and why are you interested in it?
2.    Possible research topic/s for the research paper.
3.    Some math you can study in relationship to your topic.
4.    What you hope to do for your “do.”
5.    How are you going to document (“prove”) you did a “do”? (Video of before/after, notes from your apprenticeship, photos, samples of work…)
6.    Your personal, intellectual, and social goals for this project and why you are focusing on them (be specific, realistic, and optimistic).
7.    What some of the potential problems might be and how you can address them ahead of time (ie: transportation, cost, injury, equipment, motivation, space…).
Use a Flee Map to plan your proposal.  Conference with Gabrielle to make sure your ideas are aligned with the expectations.  Do a rough draft on a chrome book, print out a copy, and have it edited/revised at least two times by a peer.  Keep your editing notes and make corrections on your document.  When you think your proposal is ready to be accepted, turn it in to the turn in basket.

Good Luck!

Please bring sandwich fixings for Friday's Service Day.

Friday is our all-school community service day.  Our family group this year is Jen's Walkabout and Tommy's Prewalkabout.  Jen's advising has organized the day. In the morning, we will be doing group team building. Next, we will be making sack lunches to take to some homeless shelters downtown.  The secondary students will be delivering the lunches downtown in the afternoon.

Students need to bring or buy school lunch as we will not be having a family feast this year.

In the afternoon, our class will be watching The Wizard of Oz, comparing and contrasting it to the text, which we read as our first read aloud.

We are hoping to put together at least 100 sack lunches. The sixth graders have been tasked with bringing the ingredients for sandwiches.  We are requesting that  each sixth grader  donate one or two of these items:

a loaf of bread
sliced, cooked meats
sliced cheese
mustard
peanut butter
jelly

Congratulations and Upcoming Events.

Great work and congratulations to all of our IA performers and techies for the "Lewis and Clark" Musical. We are fortunate to have such dedicated artists in our community.

We have a few special events coming up next week I wanted everyone to be aware of.

On Wednesday, visitors will be in our classroom to observe our second Socratic Seminar.  Students have been engaged in deep conversations and analysis of our two texts in preparation for our scholarly discussion. Your child might have brought home a copy of the text so they can get your feedback.

Thursday is Guinness World Record Day and from 11:00-11:45, certain IA students will be cupstacking in a nationwide attempt to break last year's world record! In 2015, 618,395 people stacked for thirty minutes on the exact same day.  This year they are hoping for over 625,000.

Break Out Boxes were amazing!

Our librarian, Diane, set up a fabulous learning/team building activity today. Two different groups solved a series of challenges and puzzles. Successful problem solving lead to a code that helped unlock one of many locks.

Halloween Skate Day 2016

Halloween Skate Day 2016

Halloween is quickly creeping up on us and it’s time for all of the JCOS creatures of the night to gather at Skate City for our wicked all school skate day.  On Monday, October 31st, dressed in our most outrageous costumes, we will climb aboard the buses and be transported to the Skate City off of 121st for a monstrous time.

The cost is $8.00, which can be paid online through JeffcoConnect up until Friday, October 14th.  If, for some reason, you pay online and your child is absent the day of skate day, the money will be used to help pay for the all school end of the year picnic.  The $8.00 can also be turned in to your child’s advisor on Monday, Oct. 31st.  We’ll be picked up from school at 9:00 and dropped back off at 1:30.  Don’t forget to pack all the gooey and slimy things that you want to eat for lunch and bring your roller blades if you want to use them.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to wear your costumes, as long as it won’t get in the way of skating (no masks or costumes that hang down by your feet).  Don’t forget to bring your head, $8.00, your slimy lunch and your costume.  Parents, grandparents and siblings are welcome to join us if they dare, but must also pay $8.00.  Please call Rosie at #303-982-7056 if you have any questions.  Come dressed in your best and be ready to have a bone chilling good time.

                                                                                      Rosie and David

Directions:  Take Wadsworth South to 6th Ave.  Get on 6th Ave. going East.  Get off 6th Ave. on to I-25 going North.  Take I-25 all the way to 120th.  Take a left on 120th, cross the bridge and turn right on Delaware.  Turn right on to 121st and follow to Skate City, which will be on the right side of the road.

Haunted House – Do you like to be scared?  If so, come on down to the gym and get ready to scream.  We will open the doors to the haunted house around 1:45 and will keep them open until 3:30 or until everyone is too scared to go through any more.
