Early Release Day Tomorrow and Conference Reminder!

Tomorrow, April 24th, is an early release day.  Students will be released at 1:00 PM and need to have transportation to get home at that time.  Students who have not been picked up by 1:15 need to come to the office for assistance in locating a parent/guardian.

Sixth graders have been working on their student-led conferences.  Come be amazed at the intellectual, social, and personal growth your child has made during the 2012-2013 academic year!

I still need conference sign-up times for Colin, Mia, and Sophie.

Invader Alert!

Asian Silver Carp, Starlings, and Kudzu, OH MY! Invasive plants, birds, fish, and insects.

You need to design a species of plant or animal that is successful in its native habitat.  Think like a scientist. Make sure the physical structure of the species is suited (adapted) to its environment.

Now that you have a species living in a healthy ecosystem, you need to transport it to a new habitat.  Was this move intentional or accidental? Who did it and how did it happen?

Excellent work! I'm sure your creation is happy, well suited to this new habitat, and has all the elements needed for vigorous success. Congratulations!  You are now the proud parent of an invasive species! In fact, your species is too successful. What damage or problems are now happenening to the native flora and fauna as a result of your introduction?

And, finally, what techniques are the humans in this invaded region going to do in response to the invasion? Will this be a partial or a complete success?

BOONDOCKS information and our new read aloud

BOONDOCKS
On Friday, May 24, the sixth graders will go to Boondocks in Northglenn for our SDL Completion Celebration Field Trip.  Students (and parents) who filled out the Boondocks voting sheet overwhelmingly voted to go with package #5.  This "Weekday Picnic Special" will cost $21.95 a person and will include 10 arcade tokens per person, unlimited bowling (includes shoe rental), laser tag, miniature golf, go-karts, rookie go-karts, slick track, Jr. Racers, and bumper boats and lunch at the All American BBQ or Back Porch Pizza Express. We are planning to leave for Boondocks from JCOS at around 9:30.  Our class will be participating in laser tag and bowling as a whole group, with the rest of the activities being done in small groups.

In order to solidify our plans for this event, I am asking for parents to start turning the money in now.  If we are unable to meet the cost of this event the money will be refunded to you and instead of Boondocks we will have a pizza party and a movie at JCOS.  Several families have already generously donated some money to a Boondocks scholarship fund.  Please consider doing the same if you can afford to; We don't want to exclude anyone from this event due to financial hardship.  If you are not able to afford the complete cost of $21.95, please contribute what you can.  The total cost for our 25 students will be around $550.

THE LAST LECTURE
During read aloud I will be sharing a book entitled The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow. The book is based on a lecture Randy Pausch gave while a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University. After he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer he was invited to give a “last lecture.” The last lecture is a tradition in which professors are invited to reflect on their lives and their career.  Randy Pausch’s The Last Lecture is a work of nonfiction that offers its readers advice on how to achieve their childhood dreams and how to live life.

If you would like to watch the vido of Mr. Pausch's last lecture, please follow the link below.

Upcoming Dates and SDL Requirements

JCOS 6th Grade Newsletter

April 5, 2013

It has been really exciting watching the development of the sixth grade Self Directed Learning Projects! Many students have been utilizing the PLAID times in unique and creative ways: Cooper and Bryce went to the Edgewater Skate Park to meet with a consultant and to work on photography and skateboarding skills. Tim interviewed his expert about scuba diving adventures. Dalani, Makaila, and Erin went to the Belmar Public Library to do research. Erin also used PLAID time to meet with her consultant. Sophie and Gianna have both been working on shadowing professionals (a chiropractor and a hair stylist, specifically).

As a reminder to all, here are the four main components that every SDL needs to have:

• You need to have “DO” portion. You create a book, run a class, design a museum display, learn a sport, train for and complete a race… This is a multi-day, multi-step process that needs to be documented in some way.

• You need to research something/someone that is related to the main idea of your SDL. You need to work through the writing process and finish with an organized essay that has five or more paragraphs. It needs to be in final draft format.

• You contacted and utilized another person who can act as a consultant or expert for a portion of your SDL. You need to document who this person is and how they assisted you. You can take a class from them. Have them write a review of your work. Shadow them as they do their job. Interview them and share your questions and answers.

• You need to have a 15-20 minute presentation of your material. Your presentation can utilize some or all of the other components you have worked on. This needs to be in a final draft, publishable format.

UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES

• April 11 JCOS Education Expo (Students will be presenting their progress on their SDL). All School Open House from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Come see the fabulous examples of JCOS learning!

• April 24 Rough DRAFT of SDL presentation and documentation due and Early Release @ 1:00

• April 25-26 Student Led Conferences. Do you want to know who your advisor will be for next year?

• May 10 SDL Projects FINAL DRAFT DUE

• Wednesday, May 15 Early Release @ 1:00

• May 16-23 Scheduled SDL Presentations

• Friday, May 24 Class Completion Celebration at Boondocks. Parents are encouraged and welcome to join us (Plus, we need drivers!).

• Monday, May 27 No School

• Tuesday, May 28 All School Picnic and Continuation

• May 29 Last Day of School! 10:00 AM Balloon Ceremony
